Entrepreneurial Steez: Designer Talecia Lisa Gordon
Talecia Gordon is a young and aspiring fashion stylist with big dreams. She is another talented individual from Toronto, Ontario, whom I have been fortunate enough to be introduced to. Please take the time to read her story as it is always inspiring to hear about another's success!
Full name: Talecia (tah-lee-cee-ah) Lisa Gordon
Age: 21
Zodiac sign: Sagittarius
Birth place, raised, presently residing: I was born in Maypen, Clarendon,Jamaica and came to Canada at a young age. Everyone doesn't believe me when I tell them I was born in Jamaica because I sound so white lol. But you can say I was basically raised in Toronto and now reside in Brampton/Mississauga.
How would you describe yourself as a child?: My mom said I didn't talk or say anything till I was about 2 or 3. I was very shy, at first, but then if you said "you wanna play tag?" I would have been the kid in your face running and screaming all over the place lol. And I'm kind of still like that now, I'm very shy for the first part but after I feel you out and see what your about I start opening up. I think as a kid I wanted to see what you were about first before I gave you the full hundred lol.
What are your five must-haves?:
1. My bible; I know weird but I get a lot of advice from there on how to deal with things.
2. Lip gloss; I have big lips so they need to be moisturized at all times my fave is MAC's Lip Glass or if funds are low or I loose it (which happens all the time) I'll purchase NYC's Kiss Gloss, there both have all the shine and thickness gloss I need and love!
3. My Blackberry; I know disgusting but I have to have it with me. To make calls and to stalk my friends and family on bbm lol sike but no seriously I think I'm addicted, but I've calmed down though because all that texting can lead to arthritis.Without it I can't call my mommy or my sis and complain about stupid things lol.
4. My debit card; If i loose that bad boy I go insane. I don't use cash that much (I don't know its weird I never have cash on me) so the debit card is a must at all times. I'll swipe 1.50 if I have to, I just don't like carrying around money.
5. My handbag; It was hard to pick this one but I was picking stuff from my bag so I just decided to put it up. It has my perfume, my lotion, my toothbrush, and toothpaste (I like brushing my teeth after meals) and my makeup bag.
Single/taken?: Single and loving it.
Personal quotes: Some come from my mom and the bible, I swear I say these almost everyday lol. "Who ever can't hear will feel," "everything happens for a reason," "God never sleeps," "being humble is the most attractive thing ever," "God has a plan and is ALWAYS in the midst," "When my God is for me who can be against me?" "I'm the head and not the tail," and, "do your thing."
First job: When I was 15 I was a Longos cashier but after 2 weeks I quit then went to Booster Juice as a crew member lol.
Education: Graduated from Notre Dame Catholic S.S and recently finished the Fashion Arts program at Humber, then God willing York Business school 2011.
Personal and professional journey: Get closer to God and become successful in no matter what field of work I'm in.
Who do you lean on when in need of support: I look to God when I'm in trouble,he's always there when no one else is there and usually praying really helps calm me down. And I usually call up my girl Bolu for encouragement or my mom and sister when I need it.
What is your next step: My next step is to get more exposure, I took a year off from school to save and while working I want to get my name out there.
Where do you see yourself in the future: God willing not working in retail, married (kids will come probably in my thirties) successful, either working for PR firm or a Magazine being the fashion director while managing my styling business on the side (I know I think I'm superwoman lol). If not in the fashion industry you could probably find me working for a accounting firm in the middle east managing one of the emirates finances while still praising my God of course lol.
Advice for others who wish to follow in your footsteps: Wear sneakers cause the road gets bumpy cause heels won't always cut it. Don't let peoples smiles fool you not everyone in a room are on your side, whether there your friends or not they'll snake you if they have to! Have tough skin because if you don't this world will eat you up kid, also don't get caught up in the things of this world it ain't worth it honey! Try to remain humble because no one likes a show off especially God. Also, don't listen to what people say about you, just believe that God loves you and to keep him first in your life and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stay true to yourself. Never change for anybody or anything!

Linpa Massage and Makeup
For the ladies,
A friend of mine recently went on a trip to Tokyo, Japan. While there, she learned a facial massage called "Linpa Massage". She was told to perform this massage before she puts on her makeup. Why?...Because it increases the rate of blood circulation in your face. Therefore, helps you acquire a natural glowing look. Once she showed me how it's done, I've been doing it each morning as part of my daily makeup routine. Not only does it feel relaxing, it enhances any makeup look. It only takes about 12-15 minutes.
Follow these 7 easy steps and see the difference for yourselves!
1. With both thumbs under your chin, take your two index fingers and two middle fingers, and press down on your cheekbones. Do this repeatedly 15 times.
2. Make a fist with your hand and roll your middle knuckles, slowly, from the back of your ear, to the base of your neck, and to your shoulder. Stop at the beginning of your upper arm bone (shoulder). Do this in one fluid motion without stopping 15 times.
3. Place your middle knuckles of the index fingers in the center of the forehead, and push apart firmly and slowly, and then knead along the hairline, about 20 times.
4. Again, place your thumbs under your chin. Then, place your four fingers of each hand on the skin under each eye. Once your fingers are in place (make sure they are positioned close together) and slowly and gently push the skin towards your ears. Before you reach your ears, pull the skin up. Your eyes will look like an east asian person (like me) if you are doing it correctly lol. Repeat this step 12 times.
5. Keep your two thumbs where they are and place your two index fingers and middle fingers directly on your chin. At the same time, press up with your thumbs while pressing down on your chin with your index and middle fingers. Do this step 15 times.
6. Now, place each thumb on the facial (cheek) bone right before your ear on either side of your face. Then, take your index fingers, middle fingers, and ring fingers on each hand and place them on either side of your nasal bone. Slowly, with your index, middle, and ring fingers lift the skin (while applying pressure) towards your thumbs. Repeat this 17 times.
7. Finally, with palms open, place each hand on either side of your face. With the tips of your fingers apply moderate pressure on your temples.

Entrepreneurial Steez: Crystal Wishart
Twenty-five year old Crystal Wishart, took her passion for photography and started her own, and successful, photography company called Concrete Jungle Photography. From weddings, landscapes, and portraits, her creativity and talent shines through each photo.
If your looking for a professional and skilled photographer for any occasion (within a reasonable price range), make sure you get into contact with Miss Wishart. Peep her interview below.
Name: Crystal Wishart
Age: 24
Zodiac sign: Cancer
Birthplace, raised, currently reside: Georgetown Guyana, Brampton
Five must haves: Nivea chapstick, blackberry, iPod
Single/taken: Completely and utterly taken.
Personal Quote: You've got a lot of choices. If getting out of bed in the morning is a chore and you're not smiling on a regular basis, try another choice. ~Steven D. Woodhull
First job: Delivering the Sunday Sun
Education: Highest level - college
Personal & professional journey: My original journey was to start with me going to Ryerson for fashion design and creating my own successful clothing line. I ended up going to Sheridan for Accouting an landing an office management job just out of school (technically). I quit that job because I wanted to do some missionary work overseas but ended up pursuing my photography career full time. Now I've gone back to my design roots and manage a custom couture store with my mom, cover fashion events and such for an upcoming magaline and starting a cake design business with my bestie from high school. I'm not going to lie, it's hard but at the end of the day i'm smiling and that's what matters.
Toughest obstacles encountered: People ALWAYS try to beat your price down when you're an entrepreneur. It may seem as though they don't trust your ability to complete the job but the truth is, they lack the knowledge to understand the amount of effort you will or have put into your work.
Most important life lesson learned: Don't depend on people to create opportunities for you, get out there and do it yourself.
Who do I lean on for support: God, my parents and my hubby.
What is my next step: To get a legitimate paying job with a magazine or newspaper.
Where do I see myself in the future: Taking photos or covering events for an established magazine or magaline.
What advice do I have for anyone following in my footsteps: Market, advertise, market and advertise!!! Stay on the grind and keep your name circulating amongst the right people. Use every chance you have to market yourself and your business. Print cards, use Twitter, a blog, create websites and groups/fanpages on social netwoking sites. If providing your services for free will help build your portfolio do it!

Health & Wellness: Christiane Northrup (Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom)
If you haven't already, I HIGHLY recommend you pick up a copy of this book today.
A friend gave me this book, three years ago, shortly after I had my son. It took me a while to actually sit down and start reading. Initially, I thought it was more for an older audience. However, I quickly realized that all women (no matter their age) can greatly benefit from the information provided.
Christiane Northrup explains how allopathic treatments (such as surgery) can save lives but also talks about the power of natural therapies and herbs as well. Basically pointing out that we need a balance between western and eastern medicine to maintain our overall health.
She also points out that many physical problems are caused by a deep rooted emotional issue. For example, a woman who is unhappy with her marriage may be infertile because deep down, she knows that her husband is not the right man to have children with.

Soul Child By Tommy:
Health & Wellness: Dangers of Fluoride
Although many people are choosing the natural route when it comes to their diet and lifestyle choices, there are still those who remain oblivious of the fact that fluoride is highly toxic. Inconveniently, fluoride is almost unavoidable in our daily lives. This is due to the presence of fluoride in most brand name toothpastes and in our water supplies (this includes bottled water sold in stores and our tap water). It is important to note that before it was used to fight cavities, it was used as rat poison and insecticide.
Some simple steps you can take to prevent over consumption of fluoride are:
Some informative links to check out for further info:
http://il.youtube.com/watch?v=WjLnPJVf1E4&feature=related
https://www.foreverliving.com/marketing/Product.do?code=028
Before I get into the harmful effects of fluoride, let me first answer, "what is fluoride?" Fluoride is a by-product of copper, iron, and aluminum manufacturing. In short, it is a pollutant. In the 1930s, an issue was raised concerning how to legally dispose of fluoride. That issue was quickly solved when one of the largest aluminum companies in the United States funded a study that concluded fluoride prevented tooth decay. Shortly after, this pollutant was even added to our water supplies.
There is an alarmingly increasing rate of dental fluorosis (health condition caused by a child receiving too much fluoride during tooth development) in fluoridated communities. Many scientists agree that dental fluorosis is one of the first signs of fluoride poisoning.
List of adverse effects of fluoride:
- "Fluoride is associated with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia. Fluoride enters the brain and enables aluminum to cross the blood-brain barrier, resulting in increased risk for these diseases. Fluoride has also been associated with low IQ and mental retardation in children (Hileman, 1988)."
- "Fluoride can cause a crippling bone disease called skeletal fluorosis. In more mild forms, symptoms of this disease include chronic joint pain, similar to the symptoms of arthritis. Arthritis has now reached near epidemic levels in the United States, and the connection to fluoridated water should be considered."
- "Fluoride depresses the activity of the human thyroid gland and has been commonly used as an effective treatment for patients with overactive thyroids. Fluoride may depress the activity of the healthy thyroid, as well, resulting in an underactive thyroid, a common cause of obesity. More than 20 million people in the United States receive treatment for thyroid problems."
Presently, the majority of European countries have rejected the process of water fluoridation. Interestingly enough, their children’s teeth have not suffered from this rejection. The cost to benefit ratio of fluoridated water no longer sanction the presence of fluoride in drinking water.
- "Fluoride disrupts the activity of normally functioning hormones. Fluoride can reduce levels of melatonin, the sleep hormone, in the body, causing chronic insomnia (Hileman, 1988)."
- Start using natural toothpastes that contain absolutely no fluoride. You can purchase these toothpastes at any local health food store. I personally use Forever Bright® Toothgel from Forever Living Products containing aloe vera gel and bee propolis. Unlike some other non-fluoride toothpastes I've used, this toothgel has a pleasant minty taste. Feel free to message me for details if you would like to purchase one.
- When buying bottled water, check the label to see how much fluoride it contains.
- Reverse Osmosis Filtration
This is used to purify several types of bottled water (not all), so some bottled waters are unfluoridated. - Activated Alumina Defluoridation Filter
These filters are used in locales where fluorosis is prevalent. They require frequent replacement, but do offer an option for home water filtration. - Distillation Filtration
There are commercially available distillation filters that can be purchased to remove fluoride from water.

Entrepreneurial Steez: Rochelle Sterling
Meet Rochelle Sterling. A twenty three year old fashion designer from Scarborough with her very own clothing line called RJS. For those of you who don't know, this is your chance to familiarize yourself with one of Toronto's very unique, very talented, up and coming fashion designers.
How would you describe yourself as a child?
As a child, I was very energetic and daring lol. I loved being mischievous, so I can laugh at the end results. If I wasn't playing around, I was very much focused on art/crafts and creating children stories. At the beginning of grade one, I was very much into sports and track & field; made it to every team and event.
Any motivational words that have helped you in your work?
A personal quote of mine is "Dare to be Different!"
Can you recall a specific experience that helped you become successful at your chosen career?
My very first job was at a small dairy product store called Reid's Dairy. I was responsible for serving ice cream, slushies and milk shakes and cashing and bagging all the other products in the store. Overall, the experience wasn't bad because I was shy and learned to get comfortable with speaking and learn how to work quickly in a fast paced in environment much like the fashion industry.
Education: I attended Seneca college (Newnham campus) studying fashion arts (FAA)
Could you provide a brief summary of your journey so far?
I learned at an early age that I have to be comfortable in my own skin to successfully progress in my endeavors. My inspiration to design began with me and my size; I currently stand at 5'11. I made it my number one goal to become a fashion designer so I could cater to everyone, no matter the size. My first opportunity came after my first year in college with a company that specialized in women's and men's varsity jackets. Once I graduated college, I began attempting to push my clothing line into the industry. Today, I'm proud to say that that I have been showcased in 8 shows throughout the GTA and developed a loving and strong fan base and clientele. What is the most discouraging obstacle you've encountered?
The toughest obstacle would be gaining the respect from members within the Fashion and Art community, especially the veterans in the industry, as a professional designer. I graduated college at the age of 19, so I was considered to be "too young" but at the same time it was my age, ambitious attitude and the garments I produced is what made them interested in me.
What are the most important lessons you've learned?
I've learned to step back and analyze and never give up. There's always a way to succeed and it doesn't have to be achieved in a standard way. Although the process may take longer than expected in some cases, the end results are so rewarding.
Who do you lean on when in need of support?
When I'm in need of support I pray first. I live by the lesson that god helps those who help themselves; so next I reach out to my family and close friend/business partner Jackie. My mom may not know much about fashion, but she has always given me beneficial advice that I can use for almost any situation.
What advice can you give for people who are interested in pursuing a similar career?
Ambition! Ambition! Ambition! Once you have that in your heart nothing can stop you and ask a million questions if you have to. Another great tip is being amongst others who are within the arts. Whether its photography or music, their pursuit is very much similar to fashion designing; feed from the positivity and energy around you.
Well, that brings us to the end of our interview. I will make sure to regularly post updates regarding any new projects she has coming up so stay posted! And make sure to do like Rochelle and dare to be different!
Below are a few pictures of some of Rochelle's work.

Where do you see yourself in the future?
At this time, I'm working on a joint project with another designer and working on new business plan to reach another plateau in my career. Afterward, I see myself owning several boutiques throughout the world and working on other aspirations such as writing informative novels and TV shows.
